Clarke-May Museum

The Clarke-MayMuseum, located at 162 West Union Street, Circleville, OH, is open to the public Tuesday through Friday from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m.  To schedule a group tour with a docent, please make arrangements by calling 740-474-1495.

The museum is located in the house built by Dr. and Mrs. Edward C. Clarke during the 1840s through the early 1850s.  Dr. Clarke was a dentist and a native of Connecticut.  A son, Dr. Edward Clarke, also a dentist, raised his family here and left the house to his daughter, Miss Abbe, an accomplished musician.  She shared the home with her dear friend, Miss Alice Ada May, for many years before her death.

In addition to the items donated by Miss May, there are other furnishings donated by local families.  The exhibit room contains Native American items, military uniforms, and women’s dresses.  Drawings of bird nests and eggs, a project begun by Genevieve Jones, line the walls of the meeting room.  Recently the museum received items from the Rex Haecker and the Mary Virginia Hannan estates.
